Christian Alvarez is a nursing major at the Stanton campus. He is 28 years old and has served as an active duty Marine for four years. “Coming back to college was very important to me because I always wanted to finish my college degree and obtain a title. More than that, I always wanted to give back to the community and help others,” Alvarez said.

Returning to college after serving in the military was an adjustment, but Alvarez made it work.

“I was adapting back to a civilian life as well as a new way of learning from college courses online after the pandemic. Before joining the Marines, I went to college and everything was in person. I had to learn and adapt to this new system,” he said. “Eventually, I began to succeed.”

Alvarez decided to attend Delaware Tech to pursue his education because of its nursing program’s stellar reputation and affordability. The College’s support for veterans was also an important factor in choosing where to succeed during his college journey.

His choice to follow the nursing career path came from his lifelong interest in the medical field. “I love to be in the front lines with the patients and help them get better. It gives me the feelings of gratitude and achievement,” Alvarez said.

During his time at the College, Alvarez has learned helpful study techniques to succeed in his coursework and recommends that any students who may be struggling should take advantage of all the resources that Delaware Tech offers. “Some of those resources are the advising center, tutoring center, clubs, the library and the writing/math center. Don’t give up just because it’s harder, but see it as a motivation and a challenge to overcome.”

Alvarez went on to say: “Knowledge is power. Every day we learn new things and nobody can take that away from us.”

Not only is Alvarez a student veteran, but he is also a student affairs specialist for the admissions office at the Stanton campus. “The relationships with my co-workers are positive and supportive, not just in the professional aspect, but also in the academic aspect of my life.”

Following graduation, Alvarez plans to work as a registered nurse. Obtaining his master’s degree in nursing is also a necessary part of his future plans of becoming a nurse practitioner.

“I won’t rest until I achieve that goal,” Alvarez said
